Bodegas Atalaya was founded in 2007 as one of a few offshoot projects of Bodegas Juan Gil, aiming to showcase Spain's indigenous varieties, in this case Garnacha Tintorera. Within the DO Almansa, this estate sits in the Albacete province, between Valencia, Alicante and Murcia, a transit zone from the Castillan plateau and the Mediterranean shores. Frank Gonzales, an Australian of Spanish origin overlooks the production of Atalaya wines, from 25 Ha planted with Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrell. This bottling is a Crianza composed of 85% Garnacha Tintorera and 15% Monastrell.

Totally opaque black dark red colour with very deep dark red black hue. The nose offers up an intense and alluring bouquet of ripe dark blackberry, black plum, liquorice and dark chocolate with a smoky tobacco like overlay followed by a hint of earth and some spice. Opulent, super rich and decadently textured the palate delivers concentrated ripe blackberry, dark chocolate and liquorice flavours followed by some toasty oak and spice. Velvety plush mouthfeel and silky smooth tannins. Superb depth and richness with long blackberry, dark chocolate, liquorice, spicy toasty oak and earth aftertaste.
Drink over the next 4-5 years (2013-2018).
