As with films, Heartland’s Director’s Cut is regarded as the definitive version – no compromises are made with only the very best parcels of Shiraz selected from each vintage. The fruit for the 2010 vintage was sourced entirely from mature Langhorne Creek vineyards (25-30 years old). In the vineyard a strict hand pruning method – vendange verte (green harvest) is employed involving the removal of selected bunches of green grapes before maturity, which reduces yield, and allows maximum concentration of flavour and colour in the remaining berries. Maturation took place in a combination of French (80%) and American oak (20%), all of which was new, for a period of 14 months.
Totally opaque, black purple colour with very deep, black purple hue. The nose displays perfumed aromas of blackberry, liquorice and vanillin toast with a spearmint overlay and hints of spice as end notes. Possessing its trademark concentration, the palate delivers very generous and rich flavours of ripe blackberry, liquorice, mocha and confectionary with a toasty back palate. Excellent depth. Fine grained, slightly chewy tannins, but in perfect balance. Long blackberry, liquorice, spice and toasty mocha aftertaste.
