Along with Chateau Lafite and Chateau Latour, Chateau Calon Segur was once owned by Nicolas-Alexandre Marquis de Segur, the trio of assets earnt him the nickname 'Prince of the Vineyards'. This noble man and vigneron once stated, "I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon". Evidently, he ranked Calon-Segur amongst the best of his crus.
Today, Calon-Segur's 2nd wine is named Marquis de Calon to commemorate this illustrious proprietor of yesteryear. The 2009 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, entirely hand-harvested and fermented over a month. The ensuing maturation was spent in barrels with 40% new oak over 24 months.

Opaque black crimson colour with dark crimson black hue. Showing good lift, ripe blackcurrant top notes are followed by some toasty cedar, earthy cigar box like characters and spice. Full bodied the palate has ample quantities of rich fruit with flavours of ripe blackcurrant and a touch of liquorice with some underlying cedary cigar box and spice. Very well integrated tannins, slightly dryish but very fine grained. Excellent length with long ripe blackcurrant, cedary cigar box and spice aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-8 years (2013-2021).
Alc 14.0%
