2009 Lafite Rothschild Barons de Rothschild Collection Speciale Reserve Bordeaux

Like the Rhone Valley, Bordeaux is also boasting a brilliant 2009. Reports state that many châteaux have crafted truly exceptional wines that match, and in a few cases eclipse, their amazing 2005s. Parker already anticipates that 2009 may well go down as the finest vintage he's tasted in 32 years of covering Bordeaux, writing "From top to bottom, 2009 is not as consistent as 2005, but the peaks of quality in 2009 may turn out to be historic." Entry level wines are always good indicators.

This predominately Merlot (65%) based Bordeaux blend (the balance being Cabernet Sauvignon) displays an opaque deep crimson purple red colour with crimson mauve hue. The nose displays youthful aromas of mulberry, dark cherry, cedar and a hint of earth. Medium bodied the palate is quite elegant whilst still possessing good fruit richness. Flavours of dark cherry, mulberry, lightly toasted cedar and a touch of spice. Fine grained soft tannin structure with aftertaste of mulberry, cedar and spice.
