A terrific Barossa Cabernet possessing great power and richness.

Glaymond's vineyards are part of a fifth generation family estate, first planted in 1961 by Gerhard Tscharke, though the family traditionally operated a mixed farm and stud piggery. Things probably wouldn't have changed if young Damien Tscharke had been satisfied with a life on the farm. After been introduced to winemaking & viticulture at University, his eyes were opened to the untapped potential of the family's site (already a reliable source of 'A' grade fruit for Rockford, Peter Lehmann and Penfolds). When Damien inherited the vineyard from his father, he realised he'd be a fool not to try to make a go of it. It's not an easy thing to break with tradition, but since 2001 Tscharke's never looked back.

After the endless stream of reds from the heat wave 2008 vintage, a feeling set in that a lot of South Australian wines were displaying a sense of sameness and/or suffering from a lack of freshness. This wine is amongst the first of the premium 2009 releases we've tasted from the Barossa and we're are both pleased and relieved to report that early indications suggest this will be a vintage where some impeccable fruit/acid/tannin balances will be achieved.

Tasting note:
Matured in new and seasoned French oak this wine exhibits a super saturated, black crimson colour with a very deep black dark crimson red hue. Perfumed aromas of ripe blackcurrant and cassis are followed by some liquorice, a hint of ripe mulberry, cedar and spice. The imposing palate is packed with dense dark fruit flavours - super ripe blackcurrant, cassis and spice are followed by nuances of black cherry and liquorice. Very fine grained tannin structure in perfect balance with the layers of fruit. Superb depth with very long aftertaste of blackcurrant, cassis, liquorice and spice. Showcases the potential of 2009. Damien Tscharke has clearly mastered the art of powerhouse Barossa Cabernet.
