2009 Chateau La Mouliere Bergerac Rouge

A generous introduction to this underdog appellation in South Western France.
Ausone, the great poet, vigneron and consul of the 1st century, recognised and lauded Bergerac and its crus. Also famous for its culinary traditions, the "Bergeracois" became a reliable source of sweet and dry white wines throughout the middle-ages, while the region was also much favoured by the negociants of Libourne, who would use the wines to "buff up" their Bordeaux. Unaffected by the "Privilege de Bordeaux", Bergerac wines found their way north and the region was able to seal its reputation on the tables of the kings of England and Prussia.

The archives of Gajeac-Rouillac attest of the vineyards of Chateau La Mouliere, on the southern bank of the Dordogne river, as early as the 17th century. Now in the hands of the Fournier family (who also own and operate Chateau de Bonhoste in st Jean de Blaignac) La Mouliere is a consistent performer of the region. The La Mouliere Bergerac red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, displaying the richness and generosity the 2009 vintage has been hailed for.

Opaque dark red black colour with dark red hue. The nose displays scents of earthy dark mulberry and blackcurrant followed by some cedar and spice. Medium to full bodied the palate possesses good richness with blackcurrant flavours overlaid by some earthiness followed by a hint of liquorice and some spicy cedar. Dryish, slightly chalky tannins but balanced. Medium to long aftertaste of ripe blackcurrant, earth and spicy cedar.
Cellar 4-5 years (2016-2017).
