Although Ata Rangi's Pinot demands a thick wallet, when one considers its consistent quality and price against top flight Burgundies, it stands as a relative bargain. The 2009 does not miss a beat, exhibiting a semi translucent deep crimson mauve colour with crimson mauve hue, and intense aromatics offering superb varietal character with perfumed aromas of dark cherries, violet infusions and dark plums, followed by some anise and spice end notes. Medium bodied, the palate possesses both of the hallmarks of great Pinot Noir – richness and power. Mouthfilling flavours of dark cherries, violet infusions, spice, anise and cedar explode onto the palate in an outstanding power wave of flavour. Fine grained, almost velvet like tannin structure. Exceptionally long aftertaste of anise, dark cherries and spice. Everything one could want from an Ata Rangi - given time this will yet again prove itself as one of the Southern Hemisphere's most powerful Pinot Noir experiences.
Cellar 4-5 years. Alc 14%
