First produced in 1987, the Menzies was named after the Australian Prime Minister, Bob “Pig Iron” Menzies. Labour stalwarts may choose to pass on this wine from a political point of view, however, that would be a serious mistake. One has to be magnanimous and acknowledge that all sides of Australian political landscape have made worthwhile contributions to the Australian economy and way of life. The wine was matured for 22 months in 47% new French hogsheads & barriques, 15% one year old American hogsheads & French oak barriques, with the balance in older French barriques.

Yalumba’s Coonawarra specialist Peter Gambetta has produced an outstanding Coonawarra Cabernet from the exceptional 2008 vintage.

Superb opaque black crimson colour with deep dark crimson red hue. Perfumed aromas of perfectly ripened blackcurrant, a touch of dark chocolate, cedar, some cigar box and spice. Rich and expansive the palate is a near perfect expression of fully ripened Coonawarra Cabernet with mouthfilling flavours of ripe blackcurrant, cassis, a touch of liquorice, cedar, some well integrated light tobacco like characters and spice. Magnificent concentration and depth. Slightly grippy but very fine grained tannins in perfect balance. Very long ripe blackcurrant, liquorice, cedar and spice aftertaste.
