2008 was a very challenging, difficult vintage at this estate, as a 13 day heat-wave necessitated a frantic flurry of picking. The 2008 Langi Shiraz has a very deep garnet-purple color. The nose is a little closed with subtle aromas of kirsch, warm raspberry and blackberry, black pepper, mace and cinnamon. This is a very different style than the 2007 with riper, lusher fruit on the palate and a little less structure giving medium acid and a medium level of fine tannins. Drink 2012 to 2020+. Just 400 cases were produced in 2008.

Mount Langi Ghiran is out there – literally. It’s location in the heart of the Grampians is incredibly remote and has a far cooler growing season than many might imagine until you consider it is placed at an altitude of around 350 meters. Amongst the ancient granite mountains of this region, the vineyards were originally planted in 1964, establishing this estate as one of Australia’s leaders of cool climate Shiraz. “Mount Langi Ghiran looks to go beyond young fruity wines. White and black pepper here are common to the style,” winemaker Dan Buckle informed me, confirming what my palate had been telling me from many years of appreciating their flagship Langi Shiraz.

Purple-crimson; a fragrant, almost floral, bouquet, its multi-spice and cracked pepper overtones setting the scene for its elegant medium-bodied palate, blackberry and a touch of raspberry fruit at its core.
