Tempranillo is synonymous with Tapas in its homeland of Spain, its soft tannins and gentle, elusive acidity pairing perfectly with Jamon, Chorizo and Morcilla sausages, olives and even grilled prawns for the lighter styles. In Rioja and Rubera del Duero (the epicenters of Tempranillo) grilled, roast and stewed lamb are ideal pairings for the richer examples.

So is this Australia’s next great BBQ varietal? With many of the trademarks of top Aussie Shiraz (savoury fruit, pepper, spice and an affinity for oak), yet lighter bodied and in some ways more refined, why not? Whether 'Old' or 'New World', good quality sausage, lamb chops and skewers, or the classic Sunday roast will all compliment this delightful food friendly varietal. And just as Australia does Shiraz, so Spain produces a myriad of expressions of it's own 'Noble Variety'. 'Joven' style Spanish Tempranillo's are intended to be consumed young, while the term 'Crianza' refers to aged wines. In outstanding vintages wineries make a 'Reserva' intended for extended aging. In extreme cases, such as Vega Sicilia's icon Tempranillo 'Unico', the wine is only released when it's ready which can be as long as 25 years after vintage!

Tasting note...
An eminently drinkable Rioja matured in a combination of 60% new French and 40% American oak. It presents a near opaque black dark crimson red colour with dark crimson red hue. The nose yields top notes of ripe black cherry followed by some leather, dried meat and spice notes. Medium to full bodied, the palate delivers black cherry, dark plum and spice flavours with a leathery overlay. Dryish finish with fine grained tannins. Good length with medium to long aftertaste of spicy black cherry, leather and earth.
