The Koltz story begins in 1995, when winemaker Mark Day and Anna Koltunov made their first wine from grapes sourced from the Bottin Vineyard in McLaren Vale. Mark has had extensive winemaking experience, being winemaker at Maxwell and Wirra Wirra in McLaren Vale. Not content with local experience, Mark has also consulted in Italy and France. Winemaking is traditional. Fermentation takes place in open vats, basket pressed and then transferred to oak. The wines are generous in style and reflect Mark's experience both in Australia and overseas. He believes that “Wines should be complex, but a pleasure to drink at any stage of their evolution”.

An outstanding peppery McLaren Vale Shiraz.
Unlike many of the other 2008 McLaren Vale Shiraz that we’ve tasted this wine displays a distinct peppery characteristic which can be attributed to the fact that vineyard is located in the sub district of Blewitt Springs which generally reaches optimal ripeness 2-4 weeks later than the rest of McLaren Vale. Maturation took place in French oak of which 35% was new. Opaque black purple colour with dark red purple hue. Lifted aromas of ripe blackberry, dark plum, liquorice and confectionary. The palate displays superb concentration delivering mouthfilling ripe blackberry, liquorice and confectionary flavours followed by some very strong and persistent black and white pepper characters on the back palate. Fine grained, slightly dryish tannins but in balance. Very long aftertaste of blackpepper, blackberry and liquorice allsorts.
