Of the New World wine producers not usually associated with Shiraz (Syrah), Chile might prove to be one of the very best. Although French clones of Syrah came to Chile only 15 years ago, it is the variety that's presently showing the most rapid growth, revealing serious potential in cooler areas like San Antonio, Casablanca and Leyda. Arboleda's 2007 Syrah was recently awarded "Best Chilean Red Wine" at the Latin American Vinalies Catad’Or competition which included 500 wines from over a dozen countries, with more than 70 wines from France, Italy, Spain and Portugal.
Aged for 12 months in a combination of 40% French oak and 60% American oak barrels, of which 82% were new, the 2008 release displays an opaque, black purple colour with deep purple, crimson red hue. The nose reveals aromas of freshly crushed blackberry,
ink and dark plum with a hint of tobacco. Full bodied, favours of ripe blackberry, inky plum
and spice are followed by dusty cedar notes on the back palate. Fine grained dryish tannins,
but balanced. Long aftertaste of blackberry, spice and blackpepper.
