Phillip Moraghan was recently graced by a visit from noted U.K. wine writer, Jancis Robinson. Arriving on site in February 2009, Robinson found the district unexpectedly chilly for an Australian Summer - surprising for a Brit who you'd have expected to be fainting rather than freezing, given the time of year. In fact, Moraghan makes the claim that the Macedon-Romsey area is the coolest of any Australian viticultural region and that his is the latest picked Chardonnay on the Australian mainland, with harvest often taking place well into April.

The 'ABC' (Anything But Chardonnay) conglomerate continues to be disbanded...
This unusual terroir encourages excellent natural acidity to develop in the fruit, critical to the wine's longevity (Moraghan never adds acid in the winery and is always prudent when it comes to the degree of malolactic ferment his wines undergo). The results speak for themselves. When Robinson tasted his 2002 Chardonnay she described it as "An absolute dead ringer for mature white burgundy" adding "the French should be force fed with this!" Deep straw pale gold colour with pale straw hue. The nose displays a lifted complex array of aromas – yeast lees, biscuit, hazelnut and nougat, with just a touch of honeycombe as an end note. Medium to full bodied palate with flavours of biscuit, cashew and nougat with spice and lees on the back palate. Creamy texture with a dry finish. Long aftertaste of spice, cashew, hazelnut and a hint of citrus. A very refined, Burgundian inspired Chardonnay. Another triumph for Curly Flat!
