2005 De Bortoli Sero Syrah Tempranillo

Tempranillo is to Spain what Shiraz is to Australia. The varietal characteristics are difficult to define. However, Spanish examples have tended to have an earthy, leather quality supported by very dry tannins. In Australia, young turk winemakers are producing full bodied cherry/ripe berry flavoured examples with much better tannin balance than their Spanish counterparts.

Very deep crimson colour with deep crimson mauve hue. Aroma of blackberry and cherry followed by a hint of liquorice and spice. The palate has impressive weight and mouthfeel, with plenty of ripe fruit flavour, black cherry, spice and blackcurrant, followed by an inky back palate. Velvet soft tannins. Long aftertaste of inky black cherry, liquorice and plum, with a spicy back palate lingering.
