Dr John Wilson produces some of Australia’s top Rieslings from his Polish Hill Vineyard and being a medico he is often delivering words of wisdom. “Some people believe that a world without wine would be a better world: but the last time that happened the average adult life expectancy was less than 30 years.” The 2004 vintage was difficult for Riesling, with the very hot summer causing considerable sunburn to exposed bunches.

The grapes were hand picked and subsequently whole bunch pressed which avoided any phenolic pickup from the sunburnt fruit. The wine is very impressive. A top example of Clare Riesling. Brilliant straw colour with golden/green hue. The nose is very intense, possibly one of the most intense of the 2004 Riesling releases to date. Lifted floral top note, followed by lemon, orange blossom and lime. The palate does not disappoint, mouth filling flavours of orange rind and tropical fruit, followed by back palate flavours of lemon, lime and mandarin. Crisp acid finish. Very long aftertaste of lime, orange and mandarin.

Wilson Vineyard Polish Hill River Riesling 2004
95 points, $22
Another switch from my normal preference (slight thought it may be) for the Wilson DJW wines. The bouquet has bell-clear notes of spice, lime and mineral; the palate is very long, as is the lingering aftertaste. With all these Rieslings, bottle age will invest the wine with greater complexity and texture.
