The Wordsworth Family first arrived in Australia in 1824 - and would you believe on their own sailing ship. Today the family runs cattle and grows grapes at Geographe in Western Australia. The 50 ha property consists of 20 ha of vines. The wines are made by consultant winemaker Time Mortimer, regarded by many as one of Western Australia’s best.
The Shiraz wines from the Great Southern area of West Australia take on an entirely different structure and style than Shiraz grown in McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Clare or Heathcote. Clearly the terroir plays a vital role in influencing the character of the wines. They are lighter, but not without flavour, and have a Rhone like elegance that makes a welcome treat from the big blockbuster wines from the other side of the Nullabor.
Very deep crimson colour with deep crimson mauve hue. Perfumed nose of spice, white pepper, plum, violets and black cherry. The palate structure has elegance which is a welcome relief from the blockbuster South Australian reds. The palate has excellent weight with flavours of plum, spice and stewed fruit followed by a hint of liquorice allsorts and just a touch of earth. Velvet tannins, with perfect balance. Very long aftertaste of cherry, spice and earth.
