The Escarpment Vineyard is a venture between Robert Kirby (of Village Road Show fame) and New Zealand winemaker Larry McKenna, who was previously winemaker for Martinborough Vineyards. Given the exceptional Pinot Noirs that Larry produced in his past life, a lot was and still is to be expected from Escarpment.
Translucent, brick red colour with brick red rim. Aroma of spice, violets, strawberry and spicy oak. The palate has moderate length, with hints of stalk evident, followed by cherry, spice, strawberry and smoky oak flavours – very moderate power wave, and the tannins are dry and chalky – being far too dry for the fruit.
Cellar 2-3 years (2007-2008)
Alc/Vol: 14.5%
