On 5th May 2003, the Tatiarra winemaker Ben Riggs together with the Tatiarra selection panel tasted each barrel from the 2002 vintage. The objective was to create distinct blends of Shiraz that would be representative of the direction and style of the future wines from the Tatiarra Vineyard. During the mornings barrel assessment two barrels were culled as not having the necessary structure to make a contribution to the Tatiarra style. They were barrel 1598 and 1571. These two culled barrels were set aside to be sold off in bulk. However, on retasting the barrels a month later, serious doubts were raised about the wisdom of culling two barrels of wine that all of a sudden were beginning to blossom. In the end the philosophical stance was taken that the selection process would not be repeated and the two barrels would remain outside the body of the Tatiarra wine. This wine echoes the exceptional quality of the final selection and represents outstanding value.

TASTING NOTE: Totally black purple colour. Aromas of confectionary, violets, blackcurrant and liquorice over a black pepper end note. The palate is very spicy, totally mouthfilling with a backbone of fine dry tannins over layers of black pepper and spice, followed by hints of coffee. Perfect balance with a very long aftertaste of blackpepper, spice and liquorice.
Cellar 4-5 years (2007-2008)
