Why is Central Otago Pinot so good?

The big answer is terroir, the smaller answer is the right clonal mix. Central Otago is the worlds southern most grape growing region, located at 45° South – which is the same latitude as Ore gon’s Willamette Valley, po sitioned 45° North. Central Otago enjoys a narrow range of heat summation, 850- 1100 growing degree days, with large diurnal temperature shifts – these shifts are nec essary for maximum flavour development. Modern viticul tural activity began in 1972, with the first commercial re lease of Pinot Noir in 1987. Pinot Noir is highly suscep tible to botrytis, so long cool, dry autumns are necessary to keep the grapes in top condition, avoiding botrytis. The soils are well drained, with good minerality and low organic matter. However, the Central Otagoans maintain that the real secret behind great Pinot Noir is that there is not a traffic light within 200 km of Otago – a pristine pol lution free environment.

Nevis Bluff is a Pinot Noir specialist. The yields are kept to 2.4 tonnes per acre, ensuring that grapes fully ripen and develop maximum flavour profiles. Viticulturalist, Tim Morrison Deaker states

"this is a special site requiring an individual approach. As a viticulturalist I want to experiment as much as possible with the aim of producing quality stand along wines from Nevis Bluff, which have now received a cult status."

Deep crimson colour with deep crimson hue. Medium body. Aroma of spice, stewed cherry, truffle and ripe strawberry. The palate has good weight and depth, showing an excellent power wave. Flavours of dark cherry, truffle and spice are followed by a touch of stalk and green tea. Fine grained tannins, perfect balance with long aftertaste of dark cherry, spice and liquorice.
