2002 Jacob's Creek Johann Shiraz Cabernet

South Australia, AUSTRALIA
$59.99 Bottle
  • ABV 15%
  • Closure: Cork

Like the Yalumba wines on the front cover of this edition of Vintage Direct, the Jacob Creek label represents another pioneering family from Australian wine history - the Gramps. To confuse the matter somewhat - Jacob's Creek is named after William Jacob, an early surveyor of the Barossa region during the 1840's. However, it was Johann Gramp, one of the earliest migrants to South Australia, along with his descendants who went on to establish the 'Orlando' wine company and subsequently the 'Jacob's Creek' brand that was to spearhead Australia's reputation for inexpensive reds overseas.

The remarkable range of wines produced by Jacob's Creek today may surprise some readers. While mass-marketed, commercial quafffers have made the brand a household name, it's lesser known wines like the icon 'Johann' Shiraz Cabernet that deserve more widespread recognition. Named in honour of Johann Gramp, this is the definitive expression of the blending synergy of Shiraz and Cabernet and represents the ultimate quality wine on offer from the company.

Very deep, almost opaque black crimson colour with black crimson hue. Holding up very well for a 2002 red. Superb, perfumed nose. Top note of spice, followed by plum pudding, cedar, vanilla and confectionary. Mouthfilling palate with layers of spice, plum, liquorice, confec¬tionary, cedar and dark chocolate. Fine tannin structure. Perfect balance. Very long aftertaste of dark chocolate, cedar and a nuance of black pepper emerging. Outstanding. Winner of two trophies and numerous gold medals.
