Notes sourced from Grosset

The blend of the 2002 Grosset Gaia follows tradition: cabernet sauvignon (75%), cabernet franc (20%) and merlot (5%). As always, it is from the isolated and windswept Gaia vineyard which is situated just below the region's peak. The wine spent sixteen months in French oak barriques, forty five percent of which were new.

This is among the very best examples of Gaia: it is an opulent, full-bodied red that is powerful, complex and deeply flavoured yet is more approachable than most vintages of the wine. There is the typical brooding, brambly, dark cherry aromas, rich, concentrated cassis and black cherry flavours with meaty, gamey, earthy, cedary notes and substantial yet fine, ripe tannins. It has a tight structure and a smooth, giving texture. In spite of its relative approachability, most will choose to give the 2002 Gaia at least short-term cellaring as it will benefit from time in the bottle.
