The 2001 Penfolds Koonunga Hill and the 2001 Rawson’s Retreat display the Rosemount influence on the winemaking. There is no doubt that these are big blends made for the global market, and might we say brilliantly put together. State of the art winemaking is employed, with the use of micro aeration and new oak chips to produce a wine that is very affordable and very drinkable every day. Very deep crimson colour with deep crimson mauve hue. Excellent nose, with lifted spice and pepper notes – youthful with a plum/liquorice background. On the palate the youthful flavours are supported by a soft tannin structure giving the wine immediate appeal. Flavours of spice and liquorice emerge. Good length with peppery back palate followed by a long blackpepper, plum and liquorice aftertaste.
