Penfolds Bin 389 was first produced in 1960 and quickly established a reputation as the ‘Poor mans Grange’. The wine was matured for 13 months in a combination new (22%), and older American Oak.
A very impressive Bin 389, that will only get much better. This wine like the other 2001 Penfolds Bin releases is much tighter than say the 1998 wines were at the same time, however they will blossom beautifully. Totally opaque black crimson colour. Aroma of vanilla, violet, spice and white pepper - a classic Penfolds sniff. The palate has plenty of flavour and missed a couple of points on complexity which is still building. Flavours of vanilla, liquorice, white pepper, plum and spice. Fine dry elegant tannins, perfect balance, followed by a long aftertaste.
Cellar 5-8 years (2009-2012)
