This wine clearly demonstrates the existence of terroir in Australia. The vineyard is located literally across the road from the Clarendon Hills vineyard, situated on soils that are quite rocky compared with the Clarendon site. The vines were planted in 1920 and are cropped at 2 tonnes per acre. The wines were made and matured in the same way as the Clarendon Vineyard Grenache - 60% one year old casks, 40% two year old French casks. Roman maintains that Grenache is ideally suited for warm, dry climates, the vines displaying a remarkable ability to ‘not shut down’ when the weather gets too hot.
Tasting Note: This wine is tighter than the Clarendon Vineyard Grenache and will need more time to reach its full maturity. Deep crimson mauve/purple colour, with a purple hue. The nose displays aromas of liquorice, spice and raspberry followed by a subtle blackpepper end note. On the palate the blackpepper flavours are almost Shiraz like, and are more accentuated with a distinct raspberry, earth and liquorice back palate. The tannins are drier, firmer, yet in perfect balance to the fruit, giving the tightness to the structure of the wine. Very long aftertaste of raspberry, earth, spice, and blackpepper.
Cellar 8-10 years (2010-2012).
