Fifth generation winemaker, MICHAEL POTTS has maintained the outstanding quality of this wine since its first release in 1998. The 2001 FRANK POTTS Dry Red affirms Bleasdale’s ‘re-positioning’ from sleepy vineyard to super premium producer. The wine is dedicated to Frank Potts, the vineyards founder who was also a pioneer of the Langhorne Creek region and highly regarded around the district. Inspector Tolmer, who was later to become Commissioner of Police, South Australia commented of Frank Potts, “One meets with extraordinary characters through life, but I doubt whether his equal could be found. In appearance a stranger would take him to be a poor labourer, with a thin, spare figure and long unkempt hair and invariably wearing his shirt sleeves tucked up. Although a most uncouthlooking person, and yet this man is a perfect genius! There is not a single thing mechanical or otherwise undertaken by him which he does not succeed in...” The Bleasdale story is of great historical interest and is published in full at www.nicks.com.au in the wine history section.
Tasting Note: The wine consists of a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Malbec and 10% Petit Verdot. An excellent example of the Frank Potts blend. Opaque black crimson colour with deep crimson hue. The nose is very impressive with aroma of spice, cedar, blackcurrant and dark chocolate followed by a violet end note. The palate has excellent weight with flavours of plum, cedar and liquorice over a white pepper back palate. Excellent length and balance. Long aftertaste of spice, plum and white pepper.
