Notes sourced from Leasingham
High quality fruit was sourced from Leasingham’s 30 year old, dry land Schobers vineyard, situated at the southern end of the valley, and from their 20 year old Provis vineyard, 5 kilometres north east of Clare.
1999 provided superb ripening conditions. Bright warm sun-filled days and cool evenings were harnessed through rigorous attention to cropping levels and careful viticulture management, to produce one of their highest yielding and highest quality crops – a winemaker’s dream!
The fruit was harvested between 13.5-14.2 Baume and fermented on skins in small batch open fermentes for 10 days. The wine was then matured in a blend of new French (60%) and American (40%) oak barriques for approximately 18 months.
Tasting Notes: Deep ruby red colour with vibrant purple hues. Intense mulberry and berry spice aroma with lifted cracked pepper and ground spice. On the palate there are concentrated sweet berry flavours with a rich dark chocolate and liquorice overtones. Ground spice and a peppery lift are well-integrated with cedar oak. Showing palate fullness with a supple texture, the rounded tannins provide a spectrum of initial silkiness, developing to the long and complex finish.
