1999 Cape Mentelle Shiraz

Cyclonic weather activity jeopardized the 1999 vintage but fruit eventually achieved ripeness and was harvested in excellent condition. Grapes were sourced from the estate's Wallcliffe vineyard grown on gravel larerite soils from weathered granite over clay sub-soils. Most of the wine was aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels, 30% of which were new, the rest was aged in large oak vats.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of sweet cherry liqueur and freshly hewn oak with cigar box edge and a hint of nutmeg spice. The overall impression is of pure sweet, red, blue and black berries. This is a sensuous wine that caresses the palate with a coating of ripe fruit and gentle powdery tannins. The essence of Shiraz.
