1998 Mt William Chardonnay

A very interesting cool climate Chardonnay which nearly achieves greatness, but falls short on complexity. Bright pale straw colour. Lifted butterscotch, toasted oak nose, followed by aromas of almond and yeast lees. The barrel ferment character is strong, yet well balanced with the fruit. On the palate, the cool climate fruit flavours emerge, grapefruit and citrus, and these are well integrated with the nut, toasted oak and yeast lees flavours. There is good length and complexity, but without that special degree of super concentration that distinguishes great wine from very good wine. A vineyard to watch.
