Mount Mary wines in the Yarra Valley, are regarded as amongst Australia's very best. The vineyard is situated on northern, well drained slopes, and historically has been regarded as an exceptional site.Established in the early 1970's by Dr John Middleton and his wife Marli, the reputation of Mount Mary has spread well beyond the shores of Australia with serious wine collectors world wide snapping up any stocks that happen to find their way onto the markets.

For the last decade, Dr John Middleton has been assisted by winemaker and viticulturist, Mario Marson, and together they have produced a collection of wines that are truly formidable. Middleton is approaching his mid 70's, consequently much of the responsibility of winemaking has been shifted to Mario Marson. Marson, while largely unknown outside of the winemaking community must be regarded as Australia's greatest shadow winemaker.

The Mount Mary Cabernets are regarded as the countries finest and positioned along side Penfolds Grange Hermitage and Henschke Hill of Grace as wine icons. The Cabernets are made with the classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot.

Notes sourced from Mount Mary

Tasting Note: This wine shows the ruby brilliance in colour for which the Cabernets family of grapes is famous. It also shows a concentration of that colour, the aroma and flavour that result from the lowering of crop yield by frost. The 1998 Quintet has a powerful, perfumed, youthful Cabernet aroma with faint hints of chocolate blended with fine oak. It is already showing remarkable smoothness filling the mouth with sweet fruit. The alcohol level is moderate and non-intrusive which Mount Mary believe suits these grape varieties. It is typical the usual elegant Mount Mary Cabernet with lots of lingering complex flavours. It has good balance and persisting clean finish with adequate grip. 12.5% Alc/Vol
