This is an unwooded blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. The outstanding feature of this wine is its powerful fruit character and lovely fresh acidity. Grown predominantly in the cool Padthaway region the fruit was picked at optimum maturity. The wine underwent a long cool ferment to help retain its natural fresh fruit flavours. This is a wine produced primarily from fruit grown at the company's own vineyards at Padthaway in South Australia. The area is renowned for the quality and delicacy of its white wines. The 1998 vintage was quite late in Padthaway hence this fruit not being picked until April. Fruit was also sourced from McLaren Vale and the cooler parts of the Barossa. The fruit was picked at low temperatures in the early morning to retain the fresh youthful fruit characters this variety is renowned for. Following crushing, the free run juice was transferred to refrigerated stainless steel tanks for a long, cool fermentation. The aim was to retain the natural fresh fruit characters of the variety and no oak contact was used. The nose gives up volumes of spicy herbaceous gooseberry fruit characters courtesy of the Sauvignon Blanc. On the palate the Semillon comes to the fore with delightful fresh, lemony acidity. The palate is crisp and clean. A delightful, easy drinking wine.
