The Italian grape varieties have created a great interest in Australia with serious planting's in King Valley and McLaren Vale. Mark Lloyd was one of the first to experiment with this varietal and the 1997 Sangiovese marks his 11th vintage. Its not hard to see what the fascination with this varietal is (apart from the obvious tax deducted, Tuscan work experience holidays). The nose is filled with a kaleidoscope of mixed ripe berry aromas. Medium weight, crimson colour. Delightful mixed spice, blackcurrant, red currant, cherry, raspberry and blueberry nose with a slightly earthy end note. The palate structure is refined, delicate yet forceful with a range of berry flavours that blossom after a decade. Fine grained tannin structure, firmish, yet in balance and enhanced by a level of acidity that makes this wine a perfect partner to many Mediterranean dishes.
