The Durif grape is a minor variety which has been found planted in the South of France and seems to thrive in Rutherglen, Victoria. Recent DNA analysis of the varietal reveals that it is most likely a cross between Peloursin (an almost extinct French varietal) and Shiraz. The varietal provides wines with strong tannins which leave the taster with a real smack in the mouth.Opaque crimson, brick red colour. The nose displays a very pronounced aroma of new leather and wet earth with underlying super ripe almost jammy plum aromas. Falling short of being described as 'Vintage Port.' The palate has loads of fruit with an interesting juxtaposition of over ripe plums, chocolate and new leather, again, with an earthy end note. The assertive tannins are quite dry and totally dominate the end palate, yet they are necessary for the huge sweet plum and jam palate flavours. Cellar 10 years plus.
