Seppelt has had more experience with this unique Australian wine style than any other winemaker in the country. Although there are no precise records, it is believed that the winery was experimenting with sparkling red wines as far back as the 1890's when French winemaker, Charles Pierlot was employed by Hans Irvine.

The 1995 Seppelt Original Sparkling Shiraz was made in the traditional sparkling burgundy style from ripe, flavoursome Shiraz grapes grown predominantly in the Padthaway and Barossa Valley districts. Inclusion of a small proportion of aged reserve wine has contributed an extra dimension of complexity to the wine. The wine was matured in large oak vats for 16 months, followed by secondary fermentation in the bottle and maturation on yeast lees for 18 months.

Deep plum like colour with a fine, persistent mousse. Rich and spicy plum and chocolate characters dominate the bouquet, together with a hint of truffles and yeast maturation complexity. The full and rich palate displays abundant berry and spice characteristics from ripe premium Shiraz fruit. Yeast maturation characters add further to the complexity. Lingering sweet tannins and natural clean acidity provide a finish of great length and flavour. This rich and complex style is delicious now, but will continue to develop and gain in complexity over the next 5 years. 14% alcohol volume.
