The Magill Estate vineyard is the original Penfolds vineyard established by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold in 1844. The vineyard is now 5.2 hectares in size and consists entirely of Shiraz vines planted between 1951 and 1985. The Magill Estate Shiraz is the only wine made at the Magill winery and has been made in a style that contrasts as much as possible to the Penfolds Grange Hermitage. It does not have the power of the Grange, the emphasis of the Magill is on elegance rather than the sheer power of the fruit. The 1995 vintage resulted in the lowest tonnage of Shiraz since 1983. The wine was matured in new American and French oak barrels for 14 months. Deep plum red colour. The nose displays rich aromas of boiled fruit, plum pudding and cedary oak with a hint of chariness and spice in the background. The palate is filled with generous ripe shiraz fruit - ripe berry flavours are beautifully integrated with the oak. Excellent balance and structure. A much richer wine than previous vintages which makes it very drinkable now or can be cellared for up to 10 years. Being made from a single vineyard site and combined with the low yields from the 1995 vintage resulted in a production of only 1468 dozen bottles. 13.5% Alcohol Volume.
