The Kings Creek Primo label is a new release and distinguishes the wine from the traditional Kings Creek wine as a premium Pinot - and it certainly is. For wine drinkers with a viticultural bent - the clone is MV6, which is proving to be very successful, giving deeper bodied wines with better colour and balance than the Mariafeld - a clone better suited for making methode champenoise base. Some carbonic maceration has been used to lift the nose and increase complexity. Medium weight, brick red colour. Pronounced nose with strong strawberry, smoky oak and game aromas. The palate is mouth filling with lots of powerful flavours and the potential to develop further. This is a little surprising, given the relatively low alcohol of 12%. The flavours are persistent, with fine tannin structure and long smoky cherry spice aftertaste. Cellar 5 years.
