Tasting Notes sourced from Henschke

This wine is named after Joseph Keynes who was an early English pioneer and settled at Keyneton in 1842. Adverse whether conditions (drought, frosts and a dry spring and summer) reduced the 1995 vintage yields by up to 40%. However, with the lower yields came greater concentrated wines. This is a very impressive red, which gives the wine lover a great deal of early drinking pleasure. A blend of 71% Shiraz, 21% Cabernet, 7% Merlot and 1% Malbec and produced from low yielding ungrafted, non irrigated vines. The wine was matured in new and seasoned American and French oak hogsheads for 15 months.Deep crimson colour with mauve edges. The nose is a delight with an almost perfumed character. Aromas of plums, spice, ripe blackberries and vanilla fill the nose. The palate displays superb fruit flavours - dark plum and chocolate spice, counterpointed by hints of cedar and leather in the background. Fine grained firm tannin structure with long plum spice and dark chocolate aftertaste. Cellar 3 - 5 years. Runner up to the Jimmy Watson Trophy.
