James Halliday grand obsession with Burgundy and expertise all fare well in the creation of Halliday's outstanding Reserve wines. The 1995 Reserve Chardonnay uses a different approach to Petaluma and Pipers Brook - it is new oak that acts as the axis for this wine, from which the other component parts are hung. It is not Hallidays best effort, but will certainly fill out and repay a five year stay in the cellar. Bright pale straw colour. The nose is quite pronounced with cinnamon oak to the forefront - and in fact remaining so throughout the wines length. Stoned fruit, biscuit and barrel ferment aromas create an outstanding uplifted nose. The palate displays a persistence of flavours with grapefruit and citrus flavours dominating, supported by the presence of cinnamon oak. Clean crisp acidity and long nutty cinnamon aftertaste. Cellar 3 - 5 years.
