Chateauneuf du Pape is the most important appellation of the southern Rhone, whose origins go back to the Papal courts of Avignon in the 14th century. Under the rules of the appellation up to 13 different grape varieties are permitted to be used of which Grenache is the most dominant. Mouvedre or Mataro is also grown on the warmer sites. Shiraz contributes to the structure of Chateauneuf du Pape with its firmer tannin grip. Few producers grow and use all 13 varieties, however, the most influential is Chateau Beaucastel. Medium weight, crimson, brick red colour. The nose displays considerable complexity, which can be in part attributed to the grape varieties used. Aromas of stewed fruit and plum dominate (not surprising given the wines 13.8% alcohol) with raspberry and spice in the background. The wine displays good weight and mouth feel with inky peppery flavours emerging over the plums. Excellent balance and delicate spicy liquorice and raspberry aftertaste. Cellar 3 - 5 years.
