The St Hallett Old Block is a consistently outstanding Shiraz, sourcing fruit from 80 - 100 year old vines. Old vines produce wines of great concentration of flavour which is in part due to their relatively low yields, and combining fruit from cooler vineyard sites in Eden Valley and those of the Barossa provide an expanded range of flavours to the finished product. The 1994 St Hallett Old Block is not as dense as in previous years - but what it lacks in pure weight it more than makes up for in flavour. Deep crimson colour. The nose is delightful, reflecting an almost perfumed quality of spicy plum, vanilla and confectionary. The palate has great concentration of flavour - initially starting with plums and chocolate, and then making a transition to vanilla and blackpepper. The tannins are silky smooth - pure velvet! Perfect balance and an exceptionally long peppery aftertaste. Don't be fooled by the velvet tannins - this wine has at least a decade of cellaring potential.
