1994 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon

This is a big, ripe, chocolate and spice red from a warm dry vintage. Opaque crimson colour and a generous 14% alcohol. The nose has complexity but without the range of notes that the 1991 or 1992 had - if you considered these two vintages as tenors, then the 1994 is deep bass. Aromas of leather, cedar, chocolate, spice, liquorice and confectionary are indicative of a heavy red to follow. The middle palate has the weight of a sumo wrestler but remains agile. Leather, cedar, spice, dark chocolate and blackcurrant flavours fill the palate. Fine grained, dry and firm tannins provide the grip to support the middle palate weight. Excellent balance and long chocolate spice and liquorice aftertaste. Cellar 5-8 years. An example where big and beautiful are a bit of a treat.
