1994 Coldstream Hills Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
We must say, that we always expect a lot from James Halliday - and probably judge his wines a lot harder than we should, but then with his extensive travels and wine making experience we have come to expect the exceptional. The 1994 Reserve Cabernet is no disappointment. Halliday has produced an International wine, up with the very best of Australia's winemakers such as Howard Park, Petaluma, Moss Wood, Parker Estate, Leeuwin Estate and certainly it would stand up against its International peers.Deep red colour. The nose is multi-layered and complex, you know straight away that a lot of care has gone into grape selection as well as barrel selection. Wines of this calibre don't make themselves. Mulberry, spice, smoky cedar, truffles with a touch of confectionary. The palate reflects the multi layers of primary and secondary aromas and flavours, all superbly integrated. Blackcurrants, truffles and mulberries are counterpointed by smoky oak, confectionary and a hint of pencil shavings. Excellent structure, fine firm tannins and very long aftertaste. A classic in years to come. Cellar 10 to 15 years.
