Doug Bowen in one of Coonawarra's great winemakers and some mayargue that he is the best. In the past couple of vintages hisreds have been monumentally structured with exceptionally ripefruit (the wines have been well over 14 % Alcohol). The 1994vintage is more classic Bowen - slightly less alcohol butgreater fruit concentration and firmer tannin structure. Thethree wines on current release - 1994 Shiraz, 1994 CabernetSauvignon and the 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and CabernetFranc, are all very serious wines for the collector, requiringat least 5-10 years of cellaring. The 1994 vintage was not a bigone as far as crop levels are concerned but with the droughtconditions prevailing over most of Australia, the results werevery big, superbly coloured reds. From a buyers point of viewstocks are on allocation this year and it's going to be one ofthose years where you really do have to get in early.A superbly structured red, but needs some coaxing to reveal itslatent beauty. Opaque brick red colour. Once worked up, the nosereveals magnificent blackcurrant and confectionary aromas with ahint of aniseed which reappears on the back palate. The cedarand vanilla oak components are perfectly integrated withgenerous fruit flavours - tightly knit, with firm tanninbackbone which tends to reinforce the concentrated fruitflavours. Long aniseed, blackcurrant aftertaste.\Z
