Made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, the wines of Barolo have been hailed as “the King of wines and the wine of Kings”. We’re not sure at what time in history that statement was made or by whom, however, we could safely say that present day Kings could do a lot better than a bottle of Barolo. The wine is beginning to show its age, being bright brick red colour and supported by a deep sienna brown rim. The nose is excellent, layered and complex – if Kings enjoyed sniffing only and not drinking, then they certainly would have found their desires answered. Perfumed aroma of new leather, spice, violets, confectionery, herbal tea, truffles and chamomile end note. The palate turns on one, and does not follow through with complexity or a flavour range that is promised by the nose. The flavour of new leather, spice and raisins are swamped by very firm and very dry tannins which leave the mouth puckering with vinous agony. Aftertaste of stewed fruits, leather and spice. Cellar 2-3 years. A wine that definitely needs food. After a prolonged breath the influence of the tannins tend to recede, particularly if the wine is warmed up to room temperature.
