CLASSIC COONAWARRA

Brian Croser has built Petaluma to be one of Australia's greatwine companies - and having done that you'd expect him to have agiant ego and a fair dose of self pride. The opposite seems tobe true. Croser has maintained his position by strictlymaintaining his integrity - sure not every vintage has been agood one, and some were not even made. Croser's own assessmentof Petaluma Coonawarra since 1979 has been ruthlessly honestwhich may surprise some. Since the 1979 vintage only the 1990and the 1992 qualify for a rating of 7/7. 1993 and 1988 arerated 6/7; 1979/1981/1982/1987 are rated 5/7; 1991 and 1986 arerated 4/7; The 1980 a 3/7; 1985 a 2/7 and the 1984 a mere 1/7and two vintages saw no Coonawarra made - 1983 and 1989. Thecurrent release 1993 Petaluma Coonawarra is a great Australianred wine.

THE 1993 COONAWARRA IS AN OUTSTANDING WINE WITH SUPERBCONSTRUCTION AND BEAUTIFUL FRUIT FLAVOURS

The cool spring and summer delayed harvest until April, bringingthe full benefits of a prolonged ripening period. The recordedsugar levels for the 1993 Petaluma were some of the highestachieved, resulting in rich ripe fruit flavours avoiding theunripe herbaceous overtones that are evident in cooler years. The blend consists of 65% cabernet and 35% merlot - the earlyripening merlot has made a major contribution to the superbpalate flavours. Maximum flavour and complexity were retained inthe wine through minimal handling. Egg white fining, - bottlingwithout filtration and two years in new French Allier and Neversoak have produced a very sophisticated wine. Deep crimson rubycolour. The nose is magnificent, reflecting the generosity ofthe year and subtle use of new oak. Spicy plum, cedar, darkchocolates, cherries and blackcurrant aromas herald in a superbpalate experience. This is a tightly knit wine with the cabernetbackbone giving the wine the sort of solidity one experienceswith Chateau Lafite, or even Chateau Latour. The ripe merlotmakes a major contribution to flavour with strong truffle andblackcurrant flavours dominating. The oak integration isflawless - with the final result being a beautifully structuredpalate with solid but very fine dry tannins. Loads of flavourand long finish. One of the best Petaluma reds to date - Cellar10-15 years.
