Riesling is the classic grape variety of Germany and one of the earliest varieties brought to South Australia. Cyril Henschke developed the Henschke reputation for riesling wines as early as the 1950s from the vineyard areas of Eden Valley and Springton. These dry, food-oriented wines were clean and crisp with the ability to age into delicious marmalade on toast flavours, due to the cool climate of the Eden Valley region. This region provides excellent ripening conditions for the riesling grape. Eden Valley riesling has a unique track record of exceptional ageing potential.Winter was late and mild with a below average rainfall. Bud burst was 2-3 weeks early, in early to mid September and a 'model' mild spring allowed for perfect flowering conditions in early December. The vintage also began 2-3 weeks early after a hot dry summer, with once again little wind as per the 1990 season. A warm to hot autumn with no rain until Easter encouraged rapid ripening and excellent maturity of the fruit. The white varieties were good to very good, delicate with ripe fruit flavours. The riesling grapes were handpicked at 12’ Be to achieve maximum fruit flavours.Riesling shows an extra dimension with bottle age. Bright gold in colour with hints of green. A ripe full floral bouquet citrus lime with marmalade/toffee/toast development with subtle menthol hints. Soft full and rich on the palate with very good intensity and balance, and a crisp finish with good length. Very good vintage, drink now.
