The Lochside Distillery was in the town of Montrose, in the Eastern Highlands and started life as a brewery in 1781. The brewery remained in the hands of Scottish & Newcastle until 1957, when it was closed and sold to Macnab Distilleries. The new owners converted Lochside to distillation, producing both grain and malt whiskies for the Spanish market, and the Sandy McNab blended and 10yo single malt whiskies. Pernod Ricard eventually acquired, then closed Lochside in 1992 with the buildings being demolished in 2004-5 to make way for a housing development. This Gordon & MacPhail bottling is an obvious collector's opportunity at a very reasonable opening price to boot.

Other reviews... Nose: Very light saltiness. A hint of pastry-like maltiness. Palate: Creamy, oily and oaty. Then pollen-like. Finish: Dry. A hint of citrus. Not very long. Comment: Never a classic, but the closure of a distillery is a loss. Lochside was a pleasant whisky, and now it is a collector's item. - Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.comsize>
