Matured in large oak casks and older oak hogsheads for 12 months. The result of an excellent vintage in South Australia, the 1990 Penfolds St. Henri is one of the very best made since its introduction more than three decades ago.Penfolds St. Henri, like Grange Hermitage, has built a tradition over many years as a wine renowned for its rich fruit flavour and longevity. The St. Henri style, however, emphasises elegance. The grapes are selected for sophisticated fruit character rather than intensity and, in contrast to other Penfolds reds, prominent oak is not an important element of the style. The 1990 Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz is vibrant, deep crimson-red in colour. The complex bouquet is dominated by intense, rich, ripe Shiraz portrayed as earthy, liquorice and subtle spicy fruit with underlying subtle oak and maturation characters. This highly individual, fruit-driven red is full bodied, rich and complex. The mouthfilling, ripe Shiraz flavours are soft, round and smooth, showing attractive pepper, spice and dark cherry varietal character. The succulent fruit is enriched and balanced by finely integrated oak and firm drying tannins, finishing with superb length and soft, lingering concentrated flavours. This wine has the depth of fruit flavour, weight and stylish elegance to handsomely reward extended cellaring, for at least 10 years, to develop into a classic St. Henri. 13.5 % alcohol volume.
