Crop Yield: 4.0 tonnes per acre.1989 was a vintage that most winemakers wish to forget. Mugford considers this wine to be the most difficult of his career. The weather was hot halfway through the ripening period and then turned and rained during vintage, diluting the grapes. The 4 tonne crop would not have made matters any easier and by this stage it is too late to bunch thin (you have to do it just prior to veraison). The wine lacks great concentration of flavour, however, it is none the less a very credible result, which reflects well on Mugford's ability as a winemaker.Medium weight brick red colour, reflecting the difficulty of the year. The nose is showing more developed character than the 1986 or 1987. Aromas of plum and leather present, good balance, just a hint of chocolate. Soft tannins and leather plum aftertaste. Drink over the next couple of years.
