1988 Krug Clos Du Mesnil Vintage Champagne

Henri Krug maintains that this is the simplest wine to produce – it’s a single estate from a single year and therefore does not have layers of complexity that the Krug Grand Cuvee has. Henri likens this wine to a straight line, where the eye has only one place to go, and one impression to take up. The Grand Cuvee, is a multi perspective experience, whereby a new vision is to be found at every turn. 6000 bottles are produced each year, making this a rare wine by any measure.Deep golden straw colour. Very fine bead with excellent persistence. Superb nose with strong yeast autolysis character over layers of hazelnut and almonds. The palate reflects the nose with strong flavours of yeast lees, hazelnut and biscuit. The acidity is a touch too high still – but recall, this wine is made from 100% Chardonnay, and so built to be drunk over the next 15-20 years, whilst still keeping the freshness.
