Every now and then, Brown Brothers release a top wine under the Family Reserve Label. The 1988 Cabernet Sauvignon is one such wine. The vintage was very successful for quality reds, and holding the wine back has added a degree of complexity. Deep brick red colour. The nose is very attractive, displaying aromas of confectionary, marzipan, some stewed fruits and cedar. The fruit flavours are somewhat restrained, the wine still remaining fairly tightly knit, with fruit beginning to fade, and a compressed palate. The tannins are very fine, still firm and lingering well into the aftertaste. The aftertaste bounces back, echoing cedar and confectionary notes. Drink now, or cellar another 2 - 3 years.
